Instead, it enraged Gordon Brown and his toughest political enforcer, Tom Watson, the Labour MP who has led what now looks like a charge to either drive News Corp out of Britain or the Murdoch family out of News Corp.

David Cameron is unable to come to Murdoch’s aide because he is in coalition with the left-leaning Liberal Democrats, which have long been at war with the Murdoch press, not unlike Bob Brown’s Australian Greens.

And after being embarrassed on a global stage, the Metropolitan Police appear hell-bent on repairing the damage from being so compromised by News Corp in the past.

For these reasons, I cannot see a long-term future for News Corp in British papers. The forces against them are just too great.

Former Keating staffer Tom Mockridge was sent to London last year to replace Rebekah Brooks as News International’s UK CEO.

On Saturday he was re-assuring staff at The Sun by claiming:

I have had a personal assurance today from Rupert Murdoch about his total commitment to continue to own and publish The Sun newspaper.
