Sky buzz: James Murdoch to step down? – Business News – Business – Evening Standard
Speculation was growing in the City today that BSkyB is lining up deputy chairman Nicholas Ferguson to replace embattled chairman James Murdoch.
Some observers have suggested that Ferguson’s decision to step down as chairman of private-equity firm SVG Capital clears the way for him to take the helm at the pay-TV giant.
Murdoch has resigned from a string of directorships, including News International and GlaxoSmithKline, in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal, but has so far shown no sign of leaving Sky. BSkyB declined to comment. However, insiders played down the speculation about Ferguson and noted his exit from SVG was part of a planned reshuffle which has seen four departures from the board.
Around 45% of independent shareholders abstained or voted against James Murdoch’s re-election as Sky chairman last November.
