The fall-out from the phone-hacking scandal has already cost Rupert Murdoch £240million, official figures show.

News Group Newspapers has set aside £23.7million for civil claims from victims and legal fees, with a further £55.5million for costs relating to the News of the World’s closure, accounts lodged with Companies House show.

The company, which also publishes The Sun, has also taken a £160million accounting write-off to cover the loss of publishing rights for the defunct Sunday tabloid.
