The News of the World suspended Ian Edmondson, the paper’s assistant news editor, who was implicated in the e-mails. In March, the News Corp. board was given a briefing on the state of the phone-hacking situation in London. “Nobody was really paying much attention in New York at that time,” a former News Corp. executive told me. But after the March meeting, Joel Klein, who had joined the company in order to start a new education division, approached Murdoch and told him he didn’t think the “Ian Edmondson situation” was going to remain a local London story.
